Degree Show - Camberwell College of Arts, UAL

June 2023

For my final degree show, I explored the industrial histories of tin and china clay mining in Cornwall and how these extractive processes have informed cultures, connection, and understanding of place for locals such as myself. I have considered the cycles of clay and its formation through the breaking down of granite. Granite has shaped the physical, economic and cultural Cornish landscape, and its interesting rockscapes and forms feature in my oil paintings. The rock sculptures in this work were made from locally dug clay and foraged Cornish clay slip, and fired in a pit fire with natural combustibles - the broken down granite forming a solid rock once more.

Painting: Double sided stretched linen, thread, oils. 115 x 175cm
Ceramics: Pit fired Cornish clay, wild clay slip. Various dimensions
